A finger ring is borrowedfrom a spectator, and placed inside the red box.A mystical amulet is placed inside the blue box.The boxes are tabled some distance apart fromone another. Attention is drawn to the fact thatthe boxes at no time have come into contact.The magician states that he will cause thetwo objects within the boxes to transpose. Thegestures are made. The blue box is opened.Apparently, the performer has failed, for the .amulet' is still inside. The red box is opened, andfound to be empty. The performer exclaims,"Ah - now I understand what happened: theamulet did not pass across - but the ring did!Lookinsidethe amulet." And indeed, thespectator's ring is found to be inside the amulet.The above plot, while original with me, wasstimulated by Alan Brown's "Restless Spirit"[Pallbearer's Review,June 1968] . In order toperform this routine, you will require two similarboxes. The red box is gaffed - it is a Rattle Box,as sold by the dealers. The amulet involved mustopen and close easily and quietly, and be largeenough to accommodate at least a weddingband. Line the inside of the amulet with felt.At the start of the routine, the amulet is inyour pocket.Introduce the boxes. Borrow a ring (smallenough to fit inside the amulet). The ring isplaced into the red box, and secretly stolen out,using the standard technique of a Rattle Box.As the box is tabled, it is rattled - thusindicating to the spectators that the ring isinside. As this action is done with one hand, theother hand (with the ring) goes into your pocket,loads the ring inside the amulet, and comes outwith same.The amulet is displayed, and placed insidethe blue box.
