Basics
This part of our guide covers the basics of MLB2k6. If you want information on playing the actual game of baseball itself,
check out our concise section on baseball strategy entitled Baseball 101. Otherwise, read on to discover the various
things you can do in MLB2k6.
Play Ball
Selecting the Play Ball feature will allow you to select two teams in order that an exhibition match be played. Once you
select this feature, you can simply scroll through the various teams that are available (more teams are available than the
30 teams of the MLB, including the World Baseball Classic teams, and teams of yore). You can select what style jersey
you want the teams to wear, what park youÓd like to play in, and the conditions of said park. If you want it to be windy
and rainy, select that. If you want an evening game thatÓs warm and clear, you can select that too. Be sure to place the
controller icon alongside the team you want to play as, and if youÓre playing with a friend, make sure he or she does the
same!
Game Modes
If you select the Game Modes feature, youÓll have eight choices to select from. You can start a season, a franchise, or
even act as the GM for one of the teams selected. You can do all of these simultaneously with different teams by saving
all of your progress in different slots on your hard drive or memory card. WhatÓs awesome, also, is that you can put
yourself into a "Situation," where you select the teams playing, the situation youÓre in, and then play your way out of it.
ThereÓs also the option to play in the World Baseball Classic with the real teams and real players on each roster, or
create your own Tournament. And of course, what baseball game is complete without a Home Run Derby?
Management
Management allows you to look at team rosters, lineups, rotations, et cetera. Depending on whatÓs been loaded when
the game is turned on, you may or may not be seeing the default rosters for each team. Nonetheless, this is a great
section of the game to check up on your favorite team, and some of your rivals as well. You can see any player on any
team and their stats, including some players in the farm system. You can also use the customized Player Finder to find a
player based on his name, position, or team. And if you arenÓt too happy with the trades teams have been making in
your season or franchise modes, or just want to see the true 2006 MLB rosters, you can always resort to resetting your
rosters here as well.
Features
Initially, there are two features available to you in the game under this header. The Create A Player feature is a deep
customizable feature that allows you to create a player of your choosing with certain strengths and weaknesses
depending on what you want to do with him. You can even put him on the free agent market or assign him to a team of
your choice. We highly recommend you mess around with this feature, as it is one of the shining points of the game. You
can also select 2k Beats here, which allows you to explore the various songs the game has to offer. ThereÓs some good
tunes in the game, so you should definitely check that out as well.
My 2k6, Extras, & Onlinel
These final three features will allow you to view some of the extras the game has to offer, go online to play friends, and
view all of your settings from your VIP save file. This is where you can investigate everything the game records that you
do, including your tendencies, streaks, challenges, cheats, and settings. ThereÓs a lot to explore here for sure. If you
choose to go online with your game, thereÓs a whole new outlet of gaming opportunities on out there where you can play
some really skilled players, or someone on your own level. Either way, mess around with these features, especially with
My 2k6. You may find some settings or other things that arenÓt to your liking in your game that you can fix here.
Baseball 101
We thought that this year it would be fun and educational for you, the reader, to have a Baseball 101 section of the
guide in order to figure out some of the things you may or may not know about the basics of playing baseball. Below,
weÓve outlined some of the important things to know, some of the vital things to do, and some of the things you definitely
want to stay away from not only in this game, but in baseball games (and baseball, period!) in general. Enjoy!
Batting
One of the fundamental features of any game of baseball is offense - batting. You can bat on the left or on the right
(some batters are switch hitters, meaning they can bat both ways) and specialize in various things. Lead off hitters in the
one spot are consistent hitters that arenÓt necessarily powerful, but that can get on base regularly to let the players after
them drive them home. The two hitter is consistent also, usually a bit more powerful than the one hitter with a
considerable amount of speed. The three, four and five hitters on most teams are the power hitters (especially the fourth
spot, known as Clean Up), where they try to cycle the one and two hitters home and do additional damage with the long
ball. From there, itÓs anyoneÓs guess. Some managers like to put their worst batters in the 8 and 9 spot (if youÓre in the
AL - in the NL, pitchers bat in the 9 spot), others like to spread the weaknesses out to perhaps the 6 and 8 spot, having
good batters at 7 and 9.
When youÓre at bat, be mindful of the various pitches a pitcher can throw. ItÓs good to know what pitches do what, where
they break, curve, or fall, so you know what to swing at and what to let go. ItÓs especially hard to do this in a videogame,
but itÓs vital if you want to be successful and draw some walks. ThereÓs no need to swing at everything - most batters in
the MLB lay off the first pitch even if itÓs right down the pipe. This is a good thing to do to get a pitcherÓs pitch count up
and to see what heÓs delivering to you. Most power hitters prefer balls high (some like them inside, some outside).
Others prefer them low and outside. Some batters even prefer to be jammed inside to pull the ball. Feeling out what
each batter prefers on your team, if youÓre not familiar with them, will be vital to your success in this game.
Pitching
Pitching is always a little awkward in baseball videogames. This is because you canÓt control a pitch like you would if you
threw it from your own hand, and itÓs hard to determine where the ball is going to end up, whether itÓs down the pipe for a
strike or left hanging; a homerun hitterÓs delight. Either way, feeling out the pitching is an absolute necessity in MLB2k6,
and perhaps the hardest part of the game overall. Each team has specific pitching staffs, and each staff has pitchers
that specialize in different things. Most teams have five starting pitchers, middle relief, various utility bullpen roles, and
an all-important closer that youÓll want to put into close games that youÓre winning, or ties, to put away the competition
and secure your victory. Keep in mind that relief pitchers, and especially closers, have poor stamina and canÓt be left in
for an extended period of time.
MLB2k6, in a realistic way, has the real pitch selection for each pitcher in the game. That means that you wonÓt be able
to throw a knuckleball with many pitchers other than Tim Wakefield, and fastballs wonÓt go quite as fast with many
pitchers as they do with Randy Johnson. ItÓs important to use all of the pitches a pitcher has in his arsenal to keep a
batter on his toes, and itÓs also important that you understand what each pitch does. The game will show you the
direction a pitch will break or curve in, and remember that you can put more emphasis into pitches by holding the pitch
button down longer. This isnÓt always the answer, however, as it can often lead to erratic and dangerous pitching. And of
course, if you want to keep a player nervous in the box, try throwing inside... they donÓt like that very much.
Base Running
Base Running is an art, and itÓs not something that every player in the game is good at. There arenÓt many players like
Alex Rodriguez who can hit 40 home runs, 140 RBI and steal 40 bases in one season. Players like that are an enigma.
The great base stealers and base runners in the game arenÓt usually the power hitters, but the light, lanky, fast guys who
can take huge leads and steal a base like itÓs nothing. You donÓt want to send Richie Sexson to steal a base. You
definitely donÓt want Barry Bonds stealing a base. You may want to send A-Rod, or Derek Jeter, or any player that has
statistical proof that he can steal a base. If youÓre confused, you can simply look at their stats. Seek out stolen bases
and caught stealing to see how many times each has happened in any season.
However, base running is also an art upon a hit ball. Knowing when to take an extra base and when to temper that
aggressiveness is important if you want to win ball games. If a ball is hit deep into a corner of the outfield, most players
can turn that into a double. Some especially speedy players can turn that into a triple. However, some players can only
turn most things into a single, and thatÓs something youÓre going to have to be patient with. Remember that when players
are directly behind you on base (as in, a man on second is trailed by a man on first), this creates a force. If a single is hit
in this situation, the man on second must run to third, the man on first to second. If a ball is in the air and caught, stay on
your bag to stay safe from an additional out. And of course, thereÓs always tagging up. If you stay on base or touch the
bag when a ball is caught in the outfield, you can then run off of the base once the ball is caught heading for the next
base. This is usually done exclusively from second to third, and even more from third to home. Sacrifice flies bring home
a lot of runs. Try it sometime.
Fielding
In baseball videogames, fielding can be an especially tricky and annoying art to master. YouÓll want to be sharp on
turning double plays, be fast with getting those gift outs (as in, a fly ball hit into foul territory), and youÓll want to play your
defense aggressively. This means that diving should be common, whether itÓs your shortstop or center fielder, and
everything should be done to back up your pitcher and ensure that as few runs as possible tally up for the other team.
Baseball is about potent offense, but itÓs also about staunch defensive play. A 10-9 victory is much easier to obtain than
a 1-0 victory. And sometimes, 1-0 victories are a hell of a lot more fun to play in.
So, what do you do if a ball is hit in the infield and thereÓs one out and a man on first and third? Well, you can hold the
man on third by making a motion to the bag, and then get the force out at second. If you want the certain out, you can
always go to first, but this may allow the man on third to advance to home. Fielding is all about feeling out certain
situations and knowing on the fly what is best to do. You have an advantage in this videogame in that if a ball is hit and
youÓre confused on what to do, you can always pause it and think about it. Real life players in the MLB, unfortunately for
them, donÓt have such luxuries. But with enough practice, knowing what to do in the field will become as second nature
to you as it is to any MLB player. Practice, especially in the field, will make perfect.
Managing
Finally, we come to the issue of managing your baseball team. This is important whether youÓre playing an exhibition
match or are in your 140th game of a 162 game season. Managing is vital. Knowing when to pull a player, when to steal,
when to warm up pitchers... these are all things that are vital in real baseball, and in videogame baseball too. Above all
else, you should remember three things on the managerial side of the ball when playing the game.
First, know when your pitcher is done. Keep an eye on his stamina, keep an eye on how the other team is or isnÓt hitting
him, and get pitchers up in the bullpen an inning before you may need them. This will ensure that they are warmed up
and ready in time. Secondly, know when to call for a steal or a big lead on any base. Try to stay away from leading with
left handed pitchers, and take as many bags as you can with fast runners when pitchers who emphasize slow, artsy
pitches are on the mound. DonÓt get greedy, but donÓt be too lax either - leads often lead to extra bags taken, while
stealing will get a man home sooner, hence scoring you a run. And finally, play around with your batting order. The order
the game gives you isnÓt set in stone, and real MLB managers change their lineups daily. Make some changes - put the
backup catcher in one game, or take the lead off hitter and put him into the 2 spot. Changes like this may increase your
teamÓs potency and chemistry on and off the field (especially important in Season and Franchise modes).
