Madden

fl ash-in-the-pan players who are good for a year, but the players that consistently excel are the ones who
can execute the basics of the game. In this section of the guide, we look at the offensive side of the

Establishing the run game
is essential to keeping the
defense honest. Before you
can establish the run game,
however, you need to learn
the basic running moves in
Madden NFL 10.

when you pitch the ball. If you miss, it’s
an easy pick 6 or fumble recovery for the
other team.
The most important key to running this
season is protecting the ball. The strip
animation along with the hard-hitting
defenders will cause you to lose the ball.
Be sure to make it a practice to cover
up the ball when you’re near a defender.
Since you can fi ght for the fumble this
season, make sure you learn the timing of
the cover-up so that it becomes second
nature to you. When you are a step or two
before the defender you need to hit the
cover-up. This decreases your chances of
losing the ball.

L.T. shows you can jump over player piles with
this basic move
The hurdle move is one that you won’t
use as often as others, but it can be useful
in certain situations. This is a great move
for when you need to jump over a diving
defender. It allows you to get over and
past the defender for a bigger gain. You
will encounter certain situations when
there is a pileup in your gap and you have
no cutback lanes to use. The Hurdle but-
ton allows you to get over the pile and get
into the secondary for a big gain.

AP uses his agility to spin away from a defender
The spin move is a quick change of direc-
tion control that you will use often in close
quarters. This move allows you to avoid
a defender while staying in stride. This
change of direction allows you to cut back
into an open lane as well. Get rolling in one
direction; once the defender commits, you
spin the other way into the cutback lane.
This move also allows you to break away
from defenders when they are engaged
with your ball carrier. This is one of the
most used moves in the rushing attack.
Getting your timing down is the key.

The sprint move is used mostly when
you need to break away quickly from a
defender, or once you have hit the hole.
The key is to not hit the Sprint button too
early; your timing must be perfect. When
you have a speedy back like L.T., this con-
trol makes the difference between a long
gain and a short one. When a defender is
trying to take you down, make him com-
mit on an angle, then cut and hit Sprint.
Once he’s out of position this change of
direction and sprinting will make it hard for
the defender to tackle you.

When you’re running the ball and need to
get away from a smaller defender the stiff
arm is the best weapon in your tool bag.
This move takes the defender completely
out of the play. When you have the proper
angle and the matchup is to your liking,
this move can generate more yards after
contact. The most important thing when
trying to pull off a stiff arm is making sure
you get the proper angle on the defender.
Once you have that you will get better
results from this move. Beware of the
strip if you miss the stiff arm.

The pitch is another option that you won’t
use often, but when you need it, it will be
in your toolbox. This control allows you
to get the ball to another player once you
see that you have no more room to run.

When you have elite backs they can pull
off both. When you get this move down
you will be hard to take down. You have to
make sure you have good timing with this
move. If you mistime your move you will
get clocked and might fumble the ball.

The dive is a move that allows you to
get over the top of a pile. You can also
squeeze out those extra yards for the fi rst
down/touchdown. This is a move you will
see more often when you’re in the red
zone or if it’s short and inches. You need
timing and you need to make sure you
won’t get met by a diving defender pre-
venting you from gaining yards. This is a
move that you won’t use much, but it can
make the difference in a game if you use it
correctly. It’s a great tool for QB sneaks.

A good pump fake can make even the best
defenders bite
The pump fake is one of the most under-
used skills in the game. A good pump fake
can make pass rushers stop in stride and
go up to try to bat the pass down. It can
also make tight defenders break early on a
double move to open up the deep pass. In
addition, a quality fake can make a player
freeze for that one second you need to get
separation. Be sure you include this con-
trol in your bag of tricks. You can also use
this move to get defenders in the air while
you escape from the pocket. Be very
careful about overusing the fake because
some people won’t bite. That added sec-
ond you took with the fake could cause
you to get sacked or lose the football.

This season the juke move has been
changed up a bit. When you use the juke
now, it’s more of an upper body dip than
a shuffl e of the feet. You need to really
practice this move because this isn’t quite
the change of direction you are used to.
This is a move now that tries to make
the defender bite so that you can change
direction. It is quite useful when you want
to cut back to an inside or outside lane.
Since your feet are moving you won’t lose
any momentum. This, along with manual
left thumbstick cuts, can really improve
your success in the run game.

The Sprint button works for the QB posi-
tion as well. There are times when you
need a burst of speed to get away from
defenders, or when you want to roll out
on a designed bootleg play. There are also
QB running plays in certain playbooks
where this added boost of speed is
needed to gain more yards on the ground.
When you make your QB a running threat
along with your passing game, it forces
the defense to defend everyone. QBs like
the one in Pittsburgh are a rare breed. Big
Ben has a laser arm and mobility to boot.
Having a QB with speed allows you to get
that added edge over the defense.

This is an excellent running choice that any
back can use. The beauty of it is that it’s
based on the player’s ability. If you have
